In Chapter XI Gann describes seven zones of activity: a normal zone with three zones above it and three below. Normal is a judgment about value and relative balance, not the midpoint of a measured swing, and Gann says plainly that either accumulation or distribution can take place there. Above normal his account moves from quiet advances to wider public interest and then to excited activity. Below normal it moves through quiet decline, increasing liquidation, and panic. Read this as a historical classification of market behavior rather than a recipe for slicing a chart into seven equal bands. The most useful detail is the ambiguity at normal: the same quiet surface can fit two opposite stories. Separate what a record shows from the label you assign. Log range, traded volume, and dated evidence of public attention first. Then state which features fit a zone and which do not. When the evidence is mixed, keep an ambiguous label rather than forcing a stage. A zone label that only becomes obvious after the next month is hindsight wearing a uniform.

A decan divides a sign into three equal ten-degree pieces. A bound, called a term in the Robbins translation, is a different kind of partition with unequal widths and its own history of disagreement. The Aries row of the Egyptian table in Tetrabiblos I.20 gives Jupiter 6 degrees, Venus 6, Mercury 8, Mars 5, and Saturn 5. Those entries are widths, so add them: the boundaries fall at 6, 12, 20, 25, and 30 degrees. A hypothetical planet at 13 degrees Aries sits in Mercury's bound. Now open the table labeled terms according to Ptolemy in I.21. Its Aries widths are 6, 8, 7, 5, and 4, so the boundaries fall at 6, 14, 21, 26, and 30, and the same planet at 13 degrees now sits in Venus's bound. Nothing in the sky moved. The convention changed. Ptolemy himself criticizes the consistency of the inherited Egyptian table, describes a Chaldaean alternative, and reports finding a damaged ancient manuscript that offered a more coherent scheme. This is an author comparing and defending systems, not a single table handed down intact. A precise-looking ruler assignment still needs a named textual tradition behind it.

Copy only the two Aries rows from I.20 and I.21. Draw a 0 to 30 degree strip for each, add the widths to place boundaries, and place hypothetical planets at 5, 13, and 20.5 degrees Aries. Name the ruler under each table.
